The questions behind the question. Period?

Anita : February 21, 2011 8:58 pm : blog, news, the sciences

The folks over at OkCupid have put out yet another intriguing OkTrends article. They’ve analyzed data from their immense database of 275,294 match questions and 776 million user-submitted answers to find the questions that are easy to ask, yet get at what’s really going on beneath the surface.

What questions are easy to bring up, yet correlate to the deeper, unspeakable, issues people actually care about? Love, sex, a soulmate, an argument, whatever you’re looking for, we’ll show you the polite questions to find it. – Christian Rudder, OkTrends

As usual, some of their findings are surprising. For instance, if you want to know if a woman is likely to have sex on the first date, you should ask if she likes the taste of beer. Say what?

To get at the data behind this and other conclusions, check out the full text of their article here.

The Science of Getting a Second Look

Anita : January 11, 2011 11:05 pm : blog, news

The MIT minds behind the internet dating site OkCupid put their fancy diplomas to use analyzing trends in user interactions on their blog OkTrends.  Their findings are often surprising and their latest article is no exception.  Titled, “The Mathematics of Beauty,” the article proceeds to break down exactly why women of similar perceived attractiveness received disparate amounts of messages. And this is way beyond all that facial symmetry stuff we’ve heard about so many times before.  A hint?  Ladies, you’re better off if someone finds you “ugly” than “cute.”  No lie.  Read on.

Rainn Wilson

Anita : December 14, 2010 10:24 pm : blog, film/video, honorary indoor boys

Best known for his love-to-hate-him character of beet farmer and paper salesman extraordinaire Dwight K. Schrute on “The Office,” Rainn Wilson is our latest Honorary Indoor Boy. My favorite Dwight K. Schrute quote? See below.

No, don’t call me a hero. Do you know who the real heroes are? The guys who wake up every morning and go into their normal jobs and get a distress call from the commissioner and take off their glasses and change into capes and fly around, fighting crime. Those are the real heroes.

So true.

Apple Store Love Song

Anita : December 7, 2010 11:10 pm : blog, film/video, honorary indoor boys, music

This is about as nerdy as it gets. And catchy as hell. By the time you watch it a second time [and you will watch it a second time], just try not to sing along. And if you thought that lyric about the hard drive was raunchy, you can thank the heavens above he wrote this song before Apple launched the iPad.

Jim Henson

Anita : November 19, 2010 5:03 pm : blog, honorary indoor boys, the arts

I believe in magic. Not the Buffy-The-Vampire kind, but the kind Jim Henson, the much-beloved creator of The Muppets, Sesame Street, Labyrinth, and so much more, brought to life in everything he touched. For all he’s done and all he’s inspired, including my Muppet-themed BBQ [invite pictured above], Jim Henson greatly deserves to be hereby knighted an Honorary Indoor Boy.
